Since OCR is working closely with the database during task routing, storing, and processing, a loss of database connection also means OCR becoming non-operational.

The interaction with the database starts when OCR REST API receives an image submission request from a client. To address the request, OCR REST API saves the task entity with an ID in MS SQL and uploads the image to S3.

Verify symptoms

When you are facing a database connectivity issue or database malfunction, OCR API response can contain the following exceptions:

SQLServerException
Connection refused
Could not open JPA EntityManager for transaction; nested exception is org.hibernate.TransactionException

Resolve

Check and fix the database connection, its configuration, health, and status.
